CaribWorldNews, LONDON, England, Weds. Dec. 2, 2009: Is former Australian captain Kim Hughes being nuts or simply facing facts by calling for the West Indies cricket squad to be dumped from test cricket?
The former Aussie skipper, who once faced down the fearsome fast-bowling quartet of West Indies greats like Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and Colin Croft, now claims the current West Indies cricket team should be declared as un-test worthy.
The opinionated 55-year-old says the Windies should only play limited-overs cricket until such time as they are again `worthy of playing Test cricket.``
His comments come as the beleaguered West Indies team fell to an innings-and-65-run defeat at the hands of Ricky Ponting`s boys from down under in Brisbane last weekend.
The Windies fell to 228 and 187 all out in reply to the Aussies` first-innings effort of 480 for eight declared in the first Test at the Gabba.
`Cricket in the West Indies is in disarray. Quite frankly, that game against the West Indies was not a Test,` stated Hughes.
Former West Indies captains, Brian Lara and Courtney Walsh, have both predicted recently that the Windies would face a thrashing at the hands of the Aussie side given the fact that they had not played together in months as a team following a bickering with the board over contracts.
Former Australian coach John Buchanan, however, does not share Hugh`s opinions. Instead, he has called for the International Cricket Council to intervene to save West Indies cricket from itself.
`The ICC must intervene in West Indian cricket . . . it is a massive job, but a strong West Indian team is essential for the future of world cricket,` Buchanan said. `They need to work how all the problems there can best be attacked over the shortest period of time. This is so important, even if the ICC diverts resources from other countries.
Buchanan said the warning signs had been there for a long time and the ICC had to act now.
`At the moment there is too much urgency with decision-making and there are no clear decisions,` Buchanan said.
`Administrators need to get all the important parties in one room and take some time making the right decisions and the right moves for the future of the game.`
The West Indies again face Australia in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval from December 4-8th.
