CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, N.Y., Thurs. June 20: The U.S. government may soon give Haitian Americans incentives to return to their birthplace and help it grow.
A new piece of legislation introduced in the House of Representatives, the Next Steps for Haiti Act, compensates Haiti-born and other American specialists for working in Haiti in the fields of education, health, infrastructure, and engineering. The act also commits the U.S. government to helping these areas grow in Haiti.
`This innovative U.S.-Haiti partnership program reaffirms our commitment to putting Haiti on a sustained path to development,` said Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (D-Fla.), who introduced the bill along with U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), and Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.).
