CaribWorldNews, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Mon. Oct. 6, 2008: Guyana and Suriname have both placed a ban on Chinese dairy products following a world-wide alert on tainted Chinese milk.
Guyana Health Ministry said its Food and Drug Department is engaged in an intensive search of the domestic market for the presence of milk and milk derived food products manufactured in China, especially "Milky Evaporated Milk," which China has identified as one of several dairy products tainted by the chemical melamine.
Suriname authorities too have ordered the removal of Chinese milk and other dairy products from supermarket shelves there.
The Chinese milk scandal broke on Sept. 14th with milk powder containing the industrial chemical melamine blamed for killing four babies and sickening more than 54,000 infants.
