CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, N.Y., Weds. July 9, 2008: A Guyanese woman and an American man face up to five years in prison, after they were convicted in a West Virginia court on a marriage fraud charge.
Authorities had claimed the two entered into a sham marriage so that Joycelyn Carol Grenada could become a U.S. citizen. Grenada, has been living in the U.S. illegally since 1987. In 2005 she married Jonathan Cobun. The two never lived together and lied about their relationship to immigration officials.
Cobun, a West Virginia native, said he married Grenada as a favor to a friend.
The two, who lived in Morgantown, might receive probation instead of jail time.
