CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Aug. 31, 2009: Gay activists are still on the war path against Jamaican singer, Buju Banton.
Concert promoters Live Nation and AEG have been forced to cancel shows by Buju Banton following protests by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.
Banton was scheduled for a seven-city tour this fall that would have brought him to the House of Blues in Chicago on Oct. 1. But promoter and House of Blues owner Live Nation called off all his appearances at their venues, the Windy City Times reported even as AEG Live/Goldenvoice, canceled three concerts they were promoting.
For their part, the gay activists declared victory.
Banton has been denigrated by gay activists for a song he wrote early on in his career - the 1988 `Boom Bye Bye,` and despite the fact that his lyrics lately have been largely along the conscious side of reggae music.
Additionally, Banton signed a `reggae compassionate act` in 2007, saying that he would not make homophobic statements in public, release new homophobic songs or authorize the re-release of previous homophobic songs.
